CARes Coal Mines / Lime Bay
Our Name
Coal Mines / Lime Bay CARes Group
Where we work
The Coal Mines Historic Site and the Lime Bay Nature Reserve are located together on the north-west tip of the Tasman Peninsula.
The Coal Mines, worked by convicts between 1833 and 1848, and subsequently by private interests, are an extremely important part of our convict history. Along with Port Arthur, the Coal Mines are currently being proposed for World Heritage Listing. It is ironic that the Coal Mines, with their grim convict history, are located in a stunningly beautiful site on the edge of Norfolk Bay.
Today, light bushland has returned to cover the site, and the convict ruins can be explored in a mellow and peaceful environment. The Coal Mines are an important and popular part of the “convict trail” on the Tasman Peninsula.
The adjacent Lime Bay Reserve is a popular spot for camping, boating, fishing, swimming, walking and natural history study. It is an area of light bushland and lagoons, surrounded on three sides by the relatively benign waters of Norfolk Bay and Fredrick Henry Bay. The coastline includes a mixture of sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, dunes and lagoons.
What We Do
Our group is involved with site maintenance at the Coal Mines. We also provide free, guided, interpretive tours of both the Coal Mines and Lime Bay area. We are interested in historical research for the Coal Mines, and natural history studies in both reserves. New members are welcomed, whether your interest is in cultural or natural history, or both.
