Friends of Marks Point
Where we work
Marks Point is located on North Bruny Island . It is currently classified as Unallocated Crown Land but has been recommended to become a Conservation Area. The Marks Point Reserve contains significant conservation values (inland Eucalyptus tenuiramis forest and shrubby E.ovata/E.viminalis forest) requiring protection under the Nature Conservation Act 2002 as well as a significant stand of large grass trees (Xanthorrea australis).
What we do
Our group was formed to maintain these natural values and to address some specific issues in the reserve:
- The root fungus Phytophthora cinnomimi has been accidentally introduced to the area and some of the community of grass trees have died.
- Uncontrolled track development has occurred on the Reserve contributing to a spread of the root fungus, increased risk of weed introduction, fire and illegal wood cutting.
- There is a small stand of gorse which must be managed to prevent further infestation of bush areas in the Reserve.
There is increasing pressure on coastal environments for camping and recreational activity. It is important that action be taken now to inform visitors about how to minimise the spread of Phytophthora and the need to protect remnant vegetation on the reserve.
The work of the Friends of Marks Point Wildcare group involves:
(1) mapping and monitoring the incidence of the root fungus
(2) installing information signs
(3) installing vehicle barriers
(4) removing and managing gorse and other weeds found in the Reserve
(5) planning for future re-vegetation.
