Whale Rescue First Response Team - Launceston
WILDCARE, in cooperation with Parks and Wildlife Service, is creating First Response Teams for whale rescue in locations that frequently have whale and dolphin strandings (hot spots) and in nearby large population centres . These teams will work closely with Parks and Wildlife Service staff to keep up to date with new methods of rescue, latest news of whale movements and be prepared and ready to respond quickly to local stranding events. First response teams will be the first groups to be notified of a stranding, and because of their training will undertake intitial care and preparation work until additional help arrives.
To be an active member of a First Response Team it is essential that you have undertaken the one day training course run jointly by Parks and Wildlife Service and Biodiversity Conservation Branch (DPIWE). If you have undertaken a training course in the last two years, and would like to join this group, please contact Jaqui Scarborough (below).
If you have not yet undertaken training, simply register your interest by ticking Whale Rescue in the Nature Care Section of the membership form. You will be sent information about up-coming training events in your area. Keep an eye on the Calendar of Events as courses will be posted there also.
Untrained volunteers are called-up if a stranding and rescue effort is extended or large numbers of whales are involved. Induction training in safety and whale care procedures is provided on-site on those occasions.
