Township Lagoon is a remnant patch of themeda grassland, home to numerous listed threatened species. Come along and learn about the natural values of the midlands area. We will begin the day with a botanical interpretation walk, and then get stuck into weeding. Weed invasion is a significant threat to grassland, as weeds compete with the native species.
We will be removing gorse, cotton thistle, briar rose and box thorn from the site.

Themeda grasslands are one of Tasmania’s most unreserved and threatened vegetation types, and have been nominated as an endangered Ecological Community. This particular site is home to nine state listed threatened plant species, including Hibbertia basaltica, Cryptandra amara, and two threatened lichens. Lend these species a hand by removing the weeds that compete with them. Bring sturdy footwear, water bottle, lunch, hat and raincoat.

Gorse Removal, Eucaluptus ovata-Callitris oblonga forest, Apsley River

Eucaluptus ovata-Callitris oblonga forest type is nationally listed as vulnerable, with less than 600 hectares left of this once extensive community. Gorse invasion is a significant threat to this community, as Gorse competes with native species, and increases the risk of fire to which Callitris oblonga ssp. oblonga is sensitive. Volunteers have been working to protect this community since 1998, but ongoing efforts are needed to control the Gorse. So come and get your hands dirty to celebrate threatened species day!
