The main purpose of the field trip is an extension search for yellow sea-lavender, Limonium australe and silky wilsonia, Wilsonia humilis. Maria Island is one of eleven convict sites across Australia (five in Tasmania) currently being considered for World Heritage status. As part of the preparation for the assessment for this nomination, a major cleanup and maintenance of the buildings of the convict probation period must be undertaken. Themeda grasslands are one of Tasmania’s most unreserved and threatened vegetation types, and have been nominated as an endangered Ecological Community. Eucaluptus ovata-Callitris oblonga forest type is nationally listed as vulnerable, with less than 600 hectares left of this once extensive community. Gorse invasion is a significant threat to this community, as Gorse competes with native species, and increases the risk of fire to which Callitris oblonga ssp. oblonga is sensitive. Volunteers have been working to protect this community since 1998, but ongoing efforts are needed to control the Gorse. So come and get your hands dirty to celebrate threatened species day!

The planting will expand the available food for the pardalote as well as assist with stabalising erosion. Assistance can be provided to arrange camping and accommodation.
