South West Campground Hosts program
Each summer volunteers assist the Huon valley Parks and Wildlife Service field centre by providing a visitor and walker information and education service in the far south.
Volunteers are based at both Cockle Creek for 2 week shifts and Melaleuca in the South West National Park for 1 month shifts. In both cases volunteers live and are based out of the Rangers quarters.
Campground hosts provide information to visitors and walkers about what to expect on the tracks, offer some wise words about safety and generally provide a friendly welcoming face on behalf of PWS. Volunteers also keep an eye on the campgrounds and toilet close to the quarters to ensure they are kept tidy and sometimes carry out maintenance work around the area
Campground hosts at both Cockle Creek and Melaleuca have radio contact with Huon valley rangers and check in regularly during their stay
To become involved in the campground host program:
Become a wildcare member by completing the Wildcare Inc membership form.
Each year a campground host program information pack is loaded onto the wildcare website through the calender of events page. This includes an application form which you should fill out and return to the contact provided.
People applying will be assessed by the Regional Volunteer Facilitator and Ranger in charge of the area. Those people expressing interest in the Melaleuca campground host program need to be able to demonstrate they are experienced in living in a remote setting and have current first aid certificate. All applicants are required to participate in induction training as the second part of the selection process.
For more information about the programs contact the regional volunteer facilitator south on 03 62648463 or 0427 648463 or pip.gowen@parks.tas.gov.au
Have you ever wanted to spend a few months alone on an island, spend time getting to know a piece of wilderness better, take part in protecting rare wildlife in the wild, feel the joy of caring for and releasing a wild animal or bird or head to the back country and do some real work?
WILDCARE Inc, in cooperation with our government partners, undertakes a number of large scale, ongoing, annual projects and programs. Information about these programs can be found below. Special projects and programs may require specialist skills and often ask for extended commitments, but they are some of the most intriguing and exciting volunteer projects around.
