Orange Bellied Parrot (OBP)

Each year, WILDCARE Inc volunteers monitor the endangered Orange-bellied Parrots (OBP) during their breeding season in far southwest Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area.  Members live for periods of 10 days at Birch Inlet and Melaleuca in Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area, making observations of the daily lives of the OBPs, including birds that have been bred in captivity and released at the beginning of the season as part of the Recovery Plan for the species.  As few as 250 birds remain in existence, making the OBP one of the most endangered species on the planet.

The Friends of the OBP work closely with staff from the Biodiversity Conservation Branch of DPIW who manage the Orange-bellied parrot Recovery Program.

WILDCARE Inc volunteers receive a small reimbursement allowance to assist with their costs.

Volunteers must be familiar and comfortable with the challenges of camping in an isolated wilderness location, be self-motivated and self-sufficient.

If you would like to be involved as a volunteer join WILDCARE Inc and register with the Friends of the OBP as one of your preferred work locations.

If you are already a member of WILDCARE, either log in to the Members Only area, or contact office@wildcaretas.org.au, to update your membership records.
