Whale Rescue

Whales strand frequently around the coast of Tasmania, as various species migrate north or south for breeding and feeding, usually in the summer months. Of all Australian States, whales strand most frequently in Tasmania. A number of stranding “hot spots” exist, particularly in the Northwest and West coast areas, but strandings occur all around the coast. If you see a stranding event, or notice whales moving up or down the coast in your area, telephone the Whale Report Hotline 0427-942537 (0427-WHALES).

The Nature Conservation Branch of the Department of Primary Industries and Water has developed a Whale Action Plan that identifies WILDCARE Inc as the first point of contact when volunteer assistance is required.

The Parks and Wildlife Service, in partnership with WILDCARE Inc, is developing a First Response volunteer network at various locations around the State. A recent Coastcare grant provided rescue trailers and equipment in those locations.

WILDCARE Inc, in co-operation with the Biodiversity Conservation Branch and Parks and Wildlife Service, regularly provides training for volunteers in whale rescue techniques.

If you are interested in assisting with whale rescues then join WILDCARE Inc and register for whale rescue on the membership form. You will receive information about WILDCARE Inc Whale rescue courses, formation of First Response teams and will be contacted in the event of strandings where assistance from volunteers is required.

Emergency calls for assistance may occur at any time of the day. Some rescues occur in isolated locations and extend over a number of days, requiring overnight camping and self sufficiency with food and other personal requirements.

Are you on facebook? Register with the Rescue Whales in Tasmania Cause. Its another way to hear about WILDCARE Whale Rescue activities.
