Friends of Lake St Clair

Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) at Lake St Clair have run a number of Ranger Assist working bees over the last few years. Recent activities have focused on track maintenance on the Lakeside track from Narcissus to Cynthia Bay, the Mount Rufus circuit track and Shadow Lake track. The working bee in February 2026 was another successful one and led to the formation of a new Wildcare group, Friends of Lake St Clair to assist on an ongoing basis.

Friends of Lake St Clair objectives are to assist PWS to protect and conserve National Parks and Reserves managed by the Lake St Clair Field Centre (area shown on the map below).

Popular walking tracks in the area include the Mt Rufus Circuit, Shadow Lake and Little Hugel track, Lakeside track - Narcissus to Cynthia Bay and Frenchmans Cap track.

We plan to assist PWS in a range of activities including track maintenance, weed control and /or removal, non-native species surveys and hut maintenance.

Our working bees and activities will be planned over multiple days with overnight camping at a base such as Cynthia Bay or out on the track for the more remote activities. We hope to cater for a range of volunteers and welcome new members to help look after this beautiful part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
